YouTube thumbnail: the complete guide to getting clicks in 2026
The short answer: a YouTube thumbnail is the image that represents your video everywhere YouTube shows it, and together with the title, it decides whether people click. The specs fit on one line: 16:9, 3840 x 2160 pixels, JPG or PNG. Everything else comes down to the idea. Across 595,660 videos from French-speaking creators that we measured, faces and text have become the norm and no longer make the difference on their own. This guide pulls together what we've learned delivering over 5,000 thumbnails, with a link to the details of each step.
What a YouTube thumbnail is, and why it matters so much
The thumbnail is the preview of your video: a still image shown on the homepage, in search, in suggested videos and on your channel. YouTube generates one automatically from your video, but you can upload your own. And almost everyone who succeeds does: “90% of the best-performing videos on YouTube have custom thumbnails”, YouTube writes in its thumbnail tips.
Why does it carry so much weight? Because your video doesn't exist for anyone until they click. YouTube counts an impression when your thumbnail stays on screen for more than one second with at least half of it visible (YouTube Help). The share of those impressions that turns into clicks is your click-through rate. According to YouTube Help, half of all channels and videos sit between 2% and 10%. Going from 3% to 6% means twice the views for the same impressions, without filming anything extra. We break down the benchmarks in what's a good CTR on YouTube.
The specs you need: size, format, file size
The technical part is the easy bit. Here's what the official help page asks for, checked on October 15, 2026:
| Criterion | What YouTube asks for |
|---|---|
| Aspect ratio | 16:9 for a video, 9:16 for a Short, 1:1 for a podcast playlist |
| Recommended size | 3840 x 2160 pixels, at least 640 pixels wide |
| File type | JPG or PNG |
| Maximum file size | 50 MB from a computer, 2 MB from a phone |
| Requirement | A verified account |
Two traps come up all the time. The 2 MB limit only applies to the app: from a computer, there's no need to degrade your image. And if the upload option doesn't show up, it's almost always because your account isn't verified yet. All the details are in our guide to YouTube thumbnail size and format, and the step-by-step is in how to add a thumbnail on YouTube.
What gets clicks, and what's no longer enough
Expressive face, big text, saturated colors: everyone knows the recipe. We wanted to know whether it still makes a difference, so we measured it on our video database.
What we measured on 595,660 thumbnails
We took videos longer than 3 minutes published by French-speaking creator channels, with settled view counts (30 days or more). On each thumbnail, a program counts the faces and reads the text on the image. A video “takes off” when it gets at least twice its channel's usual views.
| The thumbnail shows | Share of thumbnails | Videos that take off |
|---|---|---|
| One face or more | 62.2% | 17.9% |
| No face | 37.8% | 17.2% |
| Text | 79.3% | 17.7% |
| No text | 20.7% | 17.3% |
The gap never goes above one point. Same story for the amount of text: 16.7% of videos take off with 1 to 3 words on the thumbnail, 18.8% with 7 to 10 words. On faces, a 1of10 study of over 300,000 videos had already reached the same conclusion.
Our take: these ingredients have become the norm. Six thumbnails out of ten show a face, eight out of ten have text. When everyone uses them, they no longer make you stand out. That doesn't make them useless, but the real difference is made elsewhere: in the idea, in how it connects to the title, and in how readable it is at small sizes.
The five rules we apply to every thumbnail
- One single idea. If your thumbnail needs explaining, it won't work. YouTube says so too: “Try not to make the design too complex.”
- The thumbnail completes the title, it doesn't repeat it. The title asks the question, the image shows what's at stake. The full method is in how to make a YouTube thumbnail that gets clicks.
- Readable at 120 pixels wide. That's the smallest size YouTube displays your thumbnail at. A bold font, strong contrast, and no more words than stay readable at that size.
- A contrast that stops the eye. Before and after, tiny and huge, calm and chaos: the eye stops on whatever puts two things in opposition.
- A promise the video keeps. YouTube's policies ban misleading thumbnails, and a thumbnail that lies makes viewers drop off.
How to make a YouTube thumbnail, step by step
- Start from the video's idea, not the image. Write in one sentence what the viewer will gain or discover. That's the sentence the thumbnail has to make them feel.
- Write the title at the same time. The two are designed together, otherwise they repeat each other.
- Pick or create the main image. A photo shot on purpose beats a blurry screenshot from the video. On a face, the emotion should read without the text.
- Compose. YouTube recommends the rule of thirds. Keep the corners clear: the video length shows up in the bottom right.
- Add text if it brings something. A piece of information that neither the image nor the title gives, never a copy of the title.
- Check it small. Shrink the image to the size of a thumb on your phone. If the message no longer comes through, simplify.
- Export at 3840 x 2160 pixels, as a JPG or PNG.
As for tools, Canva is enough to get started, with its limits. Photoshop remains the go-to for professionals, and Photopea and Figma are free alternatives. As for AI, it helps with some steps: we covered it in should you make your YouTube thumbnails with AI.
Upload, test, measure
Once your thumbnail is ready, you upload it from YouTube Studio or the app, either when you publish or later on a video that's already live. The step-by-step and the common blockers are in how to add a thumbnail on YouTube.
After that, don't guess: test. YouTube Studio's “Test & compare” tool takes up to three variants and picks the winner based on watch time share, not click-through rate. So a thumbnail that gets clicks but disappoints can lose. It's all explained in how to test your YouTube thumbnails.
Finally, track your click-through rate in YouTube Studio and compare it to your own average rather than other channels'. And don't let your old videos sit there: YouTube itself recommends updating old thumbnails to attract new viewers.
DIY or outsource: what it costs
Making your own thumbnails isn't free, even with free software: one site that trains thumbnail designers puts it at 1 to 2 hours of work per thumbnail. If you outsource, prices range from a few euros to several hundred:
| Option | Price per thumbnail |
|---|---|
| International platforms | From $5 |
| ComeUp (France) | €15 to €80 |
| Miniads | €78, then decreasing: €669 for 10, down to €55 per thumbnail in volume |
| Established designer | Around €200 |
To judge a price, look at what the thumbnail brings in. A thumbnail that takes your video from 3% to 5% click-through rate gives it two thirds more views for the same impressions. Frequently asked questions
What is a YouTube thumbnail?
It's the image that represents your video on the homepage, in search, in suggested videos and on your channel. YouTube generates one automatically, but you can upload your own custom thumbnail in 16:9 from YouTube Studio or the app.
What size is a YouTube thumbnail?
YouTube recommends 3840 x 2160 pixels in 16:9, with a minimum width of 640 pixels, as a JPG or PNG. The maximum file size is 50 MB from a computer and 2 MB from a phone.
Should I put my face on my YouTube thumbnail?
You don't have to. Across 595,660 videos from French-speaking creators, videos whose thumbnail shows a face take off only slightly more often than the rest: 17.9% vs. 17.2%. A face helps when its emotion tells the story of the video, not as a rule.
Why can't I upload a custom thumbnail?
In most cases, your account isn't verified yet. You verify it with your phone number at youtube.com/verify, and the upload option then shows up in YouTube Studio.
How much does a YouTube thumbnail cost?
From $5 on international freelance platforms to around €200 with an established designer. At Miniads, a thumbnail costs €78 and the price drops with volume. If you make it yourself, the main cost is time: 1 to 2 hours per thumbnail.
