Thumbnail designer: what is the job, and how much does it pay?

A thumbnail designer is a graphic designer who specializes in YouTube thumbnails, and often in the titles that go with them. Their work is judged by the clicks the thumbnail earns, not just by how good the image looks. In France, the job went mainstream with Aziatack, Inoxtag’s thumbnail designer, who in 2025 became the first person in the field to sign a permanent employment contract. Here is what a thumbnail designer does, what they earn, with sourced figures, and how to become one.

Thumbnail designer: the definition

In France the job has its own word, “miniamaker”, a blend of “miniature” (French for thumbnail) and “maker”. It spread through the French YouTube scene without anyone really knowing who coined it, and plenty of people just say they “do the thumbs”. What sets a thumbnail designer apart from a general graphic designer is the goal: a graphic designer executes a brief, a thumbnail designer looks for what will make the right audience click.

The stakes are real. YouTube says so in its help center: viewers see the thumbnail and title first, and “90% of the best-performing videos have custom thumbnails”. So a thumbnail designer works on the first impression of every video.

What a thumbnail designer actually does

  • Study the niche. Look at what already gets clicks on the topic, and decide whether to follow the codes or break them.
  • Pick the angle with the creator. Which promise, which emotion, which element to show first.
  • Write the text and suggest titles. 3 to 5 words on the image, which complete the title instead of repeating it.
  • Compose and retouch. Cutouts, lighting, contrast, readability at tiny sizes, usually in Photoshop.
  • Prepare variants. YouTube lets you test up to three titles and thumbnails on the same video, and keeps the one that earns the most watch time.
  • Follow the rules. The right format, and never a misleading thumbnail: YouTube’s policies ban them.

The full step-by-step method is in how to make a thumbnail that gets clicks.

Aziatack, the story that put the job on the map

The best-known thumbnail designer in France goes by Aziatack. He works with Inoxtag, and La revue des médias, published by the INA, traced his path in late 2025: when he started out, he made thumbnails for about ten euros. In September 2025, at 29, he became the first person in the field to land a permanent contract, paid around €3,000 per month. The same article tells how a redesigned thumbnail took a video from 4 million to more than 10 million views.

What stands out is the time involved. Speaking to Le Parisien in 2023, he mentioned spending 10 hours on a single thumbnail, and added that he never went to college. At the top of the field, a thumbnail gets the same care as a movie poster.

How much does a thumbnail designer earn?

Income varies a lot with experience and status. Here are the public figures we were able to verify, all from the French market.

The LADN figures come from its investigation into the behind-the-scenes workers of YouTubers. The job listing does not say whether the salary is gross or net. The market has moved a lot: around 2019, rates rarely went above €20 per thumbnail, according to Stup. And salaried positions are still the exception: creators more often ask a freelancer for exclusivity. Current prices, from the client side, are in how much a YouTube thumbnail costs.

A thumbnail designer’s tools

Photoshop is still the go-to tool, for cutouts and retouching. It costs €26.21 per month incl. VAT on an annual plan, according to Adobe’s French pricing page. Photopea copies its interface in the browser with no subscription, Figma has a free plan, and Canva does the job when you are starting out. Generative AI tools are entering the field too, with their limits: we covered them in YouTube thumbnails and AI.

Why a thumbnail designer thinks both small and big

A thumbnail lives at every size. In France, among YouTube users, 89% watch it on a smartphone, 78% on a computer and 67% on a TV, according to Arcom’s 2026 audio-video trends barometer. These are usage rates, not shares of watch time: most people switch between screens. So a good thumbnail designer checks the thumbnail shrunk down to the size of a fingertip, and blown up on a living-room screen.

Becoming a thumbnail designer

No degree is required: your portfolio is what counts. The most common path: redo the thumbnails of existing videos to show what you can do, pick one or two niches, then reach out to mid-sized channels. Online courses exist in France, priced between €97 and €275 based on the prices listed on September 11, 2026 on minia-pro.com, formationminiamaker.com and miniatureyoutube.com. None of them is official, and none replaces dozens of thumbnails tested for real.

Two skills set you apart from a regular graphic designer: reading a video’s analytics, especially the impressions click-through rate, and knowing how to write, because a thumbnail and a title are designed together.

Working with a thumbnail designer

As a creator, you have two options: a freelancer, ideal if you publish rarely and have found a style that fits your channel, or an agency, which makes more sense once you publish every week and can’t afford to wait. We compared French thumbnail agencies and their prices. Miniads is one of them: a team that applies this method, 3 titles suggested per video, delivery within 48 h and unlimited revisions, from €78. Against Miniamea, the other player targeting business channels, we compare ourselves in detail in Miniamea vs Miniads.
